Run with the Chiefs 2018

As sure as spring, another sign of the impending finale of another year at Norquay School is the annual Run with the Chiefs event.

The chiefs in this case are former MLA Kevin Chief, who started the event ten years ago, and Winnipeg Police Chief Danny Smyth. Chief Smyth runs in the footsteps of former chiefs of police Keith McCaskill and Devon Clunis, who also participated in years past.

“We’ve always said that you have to feel safe and feel proud of your neighbourhood, and having the Winnipeg Police come out with us and celebrate is great,” Mr. Chief said. “They are there with us through our most difficult times, but they are also here with us today to help us celebrate. We’re very lucky to have Chief Smyth and the Winnipeg Police Service supporting us.”

The two chiefs were joined on June 8 by Mayor Brian Bowman, WSD Trustee Arlene Reid, students, staff and a large group of volunteers to make for a great run in the sun.

“This is a great day to be out with these kids,” Chief Smyth said. “It really is about the community. There are people helping to run this event that ran in the original run 10 years ago, so it’s nice to see that cycle.”

The event was made possible with partnerships with WASAC (the Winnipeg Aboriginal Sports Achievement Centre), Lafarge Canada (who have had an ongoing volunteer relationship with Norquay for many years), Winnipeg Police Service, Point Douglas seniors and other community members.

“I always say Norquay School is the heartbeat of the North Point Douglas community,” said Principal Leslie Last. “I can’t imagine not having Run with the Chiefs here, it’s all about community spirit and having everyone involved. We really are blessed to have so many people supporting this community.”
