IMPORTANT UPDATE (MARCH 8, 2016)
The Winnipeg School Division (WSD) Board of Trustees has approved plans for three new bilingual language programs – Spanish, Cree and Ojibwe.
Schools are continuing to accept registrations for these bilingual language programs at this time.
All of the new bilingual language programs start at Kindergarten with each year adding the next grade. Isaac Brock School is hosting the Cree and Ojibwe bilingual language programs while Earl Grey School hosts the Spanish bilingual language program. Next steps include attaining Manitoba Education approval of the curriculum and hiring bilingual language teachers.
The Winnipeg School Division is pleased to offer a number of different program options to our students who are starting Kindergarten in September 2016. You may choose to register your child in the English Program, or in the French Immersion Program, or in a Bilingual Language Program.
In addition to the existing programs listed below, Indigenous Cree and Ojibwe Bilingual Language Programs will be established at Isaac Brock School and a Spanish Bilingual Language Program at Earl Grey School. An additional French Immersion dual track language program will be established at Luxton School.
- In Manitoba, the French Immersion Program is offered in one of two school environments:
- the single track model in which the entire student population is enrolled in the French Immersion Program (Milieu)
- the dual track model in which both English and French Immersion Programs coexist in the same school

École George V School
École J.B. Mitchell School
École Laura Secord School

WSD Language Programs Q and A
A minimum of 20 students is required to register in Kindergarten for each of the new language programs in order for WSD to be able to guarantee that the program will be offered in September. Transportation will be provided for students living more than 1.6 kilometers from the school where the language program is offered. Please note that registration in these programs for children who will be turning five by the end of 2016 must be completed by January 29, 2016. You must register in person at the designated school. A checklist of documents you need to bring when registering is posted above in various languages. Please note the January 29 deadline is for new language programs only - the registration deadline for established language program schools is in March.
If you have any questions about the language programs, please contact Fatima Mota, Superintendent of Education Services – Equity & Diversity, Inclusive Education, at the Winnipeg School Division 204-775-0231.
