Food and Nutrition students at St. John’s High School are not only learning about healthy diets in the classroom—they are learning kitchen skills that will be of value to them for the rest of their lives.

Recently students had the opportunity to learn from a registered dietitian, Gina Sutherland, with Manitoba Chicken Producers.

Manitoba Chicken Producers is a farmer-run organization located in Manitoba, and its main objective is to ensure enough products are produced to meet consumer needs in the marketplace. They regulate egg hatching and chicken production in Manitoba.

“Students got to learn from a professional working in the field, which allows them to connect their classroom learning to real-world industries,” said Kerri Mannal, the Foods and Nutrition teacher at St. John’s High School. “The students enjoyed cooking a new recipe and using cooking techniques used in the food industry.”

Sutherland taught students some quick recipes (including homemade chicken burgers) and talked about poultry’s made-in-Manitoba connection.

“It’s important to know where our food is coming from. We have local chicken farmers providing healthy, nutritious chicken in our stores,” explained Sutherland. “By showing students how easy chicken is to work with and why it’s important to have chicken in our diet and other protein sources, they leave with a better understanding of a healthy diet.”
