Grade 9
Regular Mathematics (10F) is a foundation course and is intended for all students who are planning to take the grade 9 - 12 mathematics courses in Essential, Applied, and/or Pre-Calculus streams. Grade 9 Regular Mathematics is a full credit course (1.0) emphasizing communication, problem-solving, decision making, number sense, and the required theoretical mathematics topics needed for the grade 9 - 12 Pre-Calculus courses.
Students are required to learn mathematical concepts through group assignments and/or projects, data collections, practice, and regular homework. Many of the exercises and problems are expected to be original or different from those presented in class.
Grade 10
Pre-Calculus (20S) is designed for students who intend studying Mathematics, Engineering, Architecture, Science or Technologies as part of their post-secondary education. Students taking this course are expected to apply mathematical concepts in both familiar and unfamiliar situations. The problems provided in Grade 10 Pre-Calculus Mathematics challenge students to demonstrate logical reasoning skills that include making and testing conjectures, judging the validity of arguments, and constructing simple valid arguments.
- Units Include: Polynomials and Factoring, Analytic Geometry, Trigonometry, Exponents and Radicals, Geometry, Rational Expressions and Equations, Functions, Statistics and Probability, and Variation and Sequence.
- Assessment: In-class and homework assignments, quizzes, tests, mental math, journals, projects, mid-term & final exam.
- Requirements: Achieved 70% or better in Grade 9 Mathematics (10F), TI-83 PLUS graphing calculator.
Applied Mathematics (20S) is one of two curricula choices for students who are planning to enter Science, Engineering, Architecture, or the high-tech world of work. Students will work independently, and in small groups, to collect and analyse data using probes, computer software, and graphing calculator. Students taking this course are expected to demonstrate responsibilities, flexibility and independence in their learning.
- Units Include: Spreadsheets, Exploring Mathematics using Technology, 2D/3D Projects, Linear Models & Pattern, Technical Communication, Relations & Functions, Coordinate Geometry, Data Management & Analysis, Measurement Technology, and Trigonometry.
- Assessment: In-class and homework assignments, quizzes, tests, mental math, journals, projects, mid-term & final exam.
- Requirements: Achieved 70% or better in Grade 9 Mathematics (10F), TI-83 PLUS graphing calculator.
Essential Mathematics (20S) is intended for students whose post-secondary planning does not include a focus on mathematics and science related fields. Grade 10 Essential Mathematics (20S) is a one-credit course consisting of two half courses. Each course emphasizes consumer applications, problem solving, decision-making, number sense and number use. Students are expected to work individually and in small groups on mathematical concepts and skills encountered in daily life, business and industry.
- Units Include: Problem Analysis, Analysis of Games and Numbers, Wages and Salaries, Spreadsheets, Trigonometry, Spatial Geometry, Consumer Decisions, Geometry Project, Personal Banking, and Probability and Sampling.
- Assessment: In-class and homework assignments, quizzes, tests, mental math, journals, projects, mid-term & final exam.
- Requirements: A sound background in previous Math curricula, a scientific calculator preferably a Sharp EL-510R.
Grade 11
Pre-Calculus Mathematics (30S) is designed for students who intend to further develop their knowledge and skills in Calculus. The exercises provided in this field are cumulative. It allows the student to master the concepts over a number of days, rather than all at once. As the course progresses students will be asked frequently to explain their reasoning and to write their proofs. Most exercises contain some problems that are aimed at a creative synthesis of ideas rather than a mastery of skills.
- Units Include: Quadratic Functions, Trigonometry, Algebra, Analytic Geometry, Geometry, Consumer Math, Logic/Proof, and Functions.
- Assessment: In-class and homework assignments, quizzes, tests, mental math, journals, projects, mid-term & final exam.
- Requirements: A sound background in previous Math curricula, TI-83 PLUS graphing calculator.
Grade 11 Essential Mathematics (30S) is intended for students whose post-secondary planning does not include a focus on mathematics and science-related fields. The course emphasizes consumer application, problem solving, decision-making, number sense and number use. Students will study interest, credit options, graphs, trigonometry, and managing money.
- Units Include: Problem Analysis, Analysis of Games & Numbers, Relations & Formulas, Income & Debt, Data Analysis & Interpretation, Measurement Technology, Owning & Operating a Vehicle, Personal Income Tax, and Applications of Probability.
- Assessment: In-class and homework assignments, quizzes, tests, mental math, journals, projects, mid-term & final exam.
- Requirements: A sound background in previous Math curricula, a scientific calculator preferably a Sharp EL-510R.
Grade 12
Pre-Calculus Mathematics (40S) is designed for students who intend to study Science, Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science and other related courses at university or college. It is a very demanding course and students are required to attend regularly, participate in class activities, complete assignments on time, and ask for help whenever needed.
- Units Include: Circular Functions, Transformations, Trigonometric Identities, Exponents and Logarithms, Permutations, Combinations, Binomial Theorem, Conics, Probability, Geometric Sequences, and Statistics.
- Assessment: In-class and homework assignments, quizzes, tests, mental math, journals, mid-term & provincial standards test.
- Requirements: A very good background in Pre-Calculus Mathematics (20S) and (30S), TI-83 PLUS graphing calculator.
Grade 12 Essential Mathematics (40S) is intended for students whose post-secondary planning does not include a focus on mathematics and science-related fields. This course emphasizes consumer applications, problem solving, and decision making. Students will study vehicle finance, statistics, precision measurement, home finance, probability, geometry, and trigonometry. Students will be required to write a provincial exam worth 20% of their final mark in the course.
- Units Include: Problem Analysis, Analysis of Games and Numbers, Personal Finance, Design and Measurement, Government Finances, Statistics, Investigative Project, Career/Life Project, Investments, Income Tax, Variation and Formulas, and Completing a portfolio.
- Assessment: In-class and homework assignments, quizzes, tests, mental math, interviews, class discussion, projects, and provincial standards test.
- Requirements: A sound background in previous Math curricula, a scientific calculator preferably a Sharp EL-510R.
