Grade 9 Science


Course Descriptor:
Grade 9 Science is a 1 semester, 1 credit course that covers a wide variety of topics.

Units include:
  • Human reproduction
  • Atoms and elements
  • Electricity
  • Exploring the universe

Topics covered in these units include: sexual and asexual reproduction, human development, human genetics, biotechnology, properties of elements and compounds, chemical symbols and families, chemical and physical changes, static electricity, circuits, hydroelectricity, astronomy, history of the universe and space.

Evaluation and Assessment:
Assignments can include worksheets, lab activities, and research assignments. Student evaluation is based on assignments, quizzes, tests and a final examination.

Grade 10 Science


Course Descriptor:
Grade 10 Science is a 1 semester, 1 credit course that increases student’s knowledge and exposes students to each of the major science disciplines, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

The units include:
  • Sustainability of Ecosystems
  • Chemistry in Action
  • Physics of Motion
  • Weather Dynamics

Topics covered in these units include: the cycles of life, bioaccumulation, population ecology, species biodiversity, chemical reactions, acids and bases, inertia, force, impulse, momentum, meteorological data, and weather events.

Evaluation and Assessment:
Assignments will include worksheets, lab activities and research assignments. Student evaluation will be based on assignments, quizzes, tests, and a final examination.

Grade 10 MCEP SIC


This course is a School Initiated Course specific to the Medical Careers Exploration Program. The curriculum and training of the Medical Careers Exploration Program are designed to expose high school students to careers in health care related fields. The focus is to give each student the academic foundation to qualify for courses in post-secondary institutions and to prepare them for their practicum experience. Through directed activities and on-site experiences at Pan Am Clinic (Feb-June), students will master and apply the skills that will enable them to become effective communicators, lifelong learners, goal setters, and critical thinkers. The experience based learning of the program will provide interpersonal, problem solving, time management, and communication skills.

* Customer Service

* CPR/First Aid

* Anatomy and Physiology

* Traditional Medicines


Grade 11 Chemistry (30s)


  • This course is a prerequisite to Grade 12 Chemistry. It is intended for students intending to continue studying Chemistry and other sciences as part of their post-secondary education. Students will develop and use science inquiry skills and recognize that Chemistry and Technology are interdependent. The specific learning outcomes for Grade 11 Chemistry are organized into the following thematic topics:

    * Physical Properties of Matter

    * Gases in the Atmosphere

    * Chemical Reactions

    * Solutions

    * Organic Chemistry



Grade 12 Biology (40S)


  • This course has a prerequisite of Grade 11 Chemistry. It is intended for students intending to continue studying Chemistry and other sciences as part of their post-secondary education. Students will increase their knowledge of chemistry in relation to everyday life and interpret and evaluate fundamental ideas in Chemistry. The specific learning outcomes for Grade 12 Chemistry are organized into the following thematic topics:

    * Reactions in Aqueous Solutions

    * Atomic Structure

    * Chemical Kinetics

    * Chemical Equilibrium

    * Acids & Bases

    * Electrochemistry
