Principal's Message

January 8, 2024

Welcome to Hugh John Macdonald School

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Everyday at Hugh John Macdonald School is a great day because your children come to school with an eagerness to learn and participate in their classes. I have the privilege of going into every classroom everyday to see first hand some of the fantastic learning that is taking place such as our Humans of HJM writing project (gr. 9), Read to Me, Thinking Classrooms for Mathematics, the Paper Airplane Challenge, Fractions and Part-Whole Thinking, solving parameter and area problems, learning about text features, metaphors, idioms, and onomatopoeia, tap dancing, Jazz Band, coding, and graphic design. I also get the opportunity to Kahoot Challenge the students on areas of study. A Kahoot is an online game designed by the teacher to engage students in learning. If the students beat the principal they can win a pizza party. HJM is getting new lockers. The old lockers were upwards of 70 years old and we are in the process of installing the new ones. When the old lockers were removed the students found a collection of items from the past 70 years that managed to get stuck behind. Items included hockey cards from the 1980’s, yearbook pictures dating back to the 1960’s, a half silver dollar from the 1950’s, notes passed from friends as well as trading cards of ‘Pop’ bands from the 1990’s. To commemorate the installation of the new lockers the students each wrote a message on the wall which will be hidden until the next time the lockers are replaced. My whole staff are very proud of the students; they truly will do great things as they are great students.

Respectfully,

Jennifer Scott, Principal
