What is Anxiety?

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental health conditions in adolescents.

While everyone may have occasional moments of feeling anxious or worried, anxiety disorders can cause continued, overwhelming worry over an extended period of time. 

Anxiety disorders can disrupt learning, school attendance and engagement, peer relationships and home life.

How is anxiety managed?

Anxiety is managed through learning various self-regulation skills and strategies. AMP is designed to help students build their skills through healthy lifestyle, Mindfulness, and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

CBT is one of the most effective treatments of anxiety.

Cognitive behavioural therapy addresses negative patterns and distortions in the way we look at the world and ourselves.

As the name suggests, this involves two main components:

  • Cognitive Therapy examines how negative thoughts contribute to anxiety.
  • Behaviour Therapy examines how one behaves and reacts to triggers of anxiety.


Anxiety Management Program (AMP) goals

  • Provide students with a safe environment to learn about anxiety and its impact on learning.
  • Equip students with the skills to manage their symptoms.
  • Reintegrate students into an educational setting upon completion of the program.

Finding solutions to cope with anxiety

The AMP is designed for students within Winnipeg School Division, who are in Grades 9 to 12, and whose symptoms of anxiety interfere with school attendance and success.
AMP is a low-enrolment classroom run in partnership with students’ home schools. It is supported by a teacher, a school clinician, and an educational assistant.
AMP runs it's sessions annually to coincide with the semester cycle.
Each session includes an initial intake period and concludes with a reintegration phase.

About AMP

The program hours are: 9:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.
This includes a supervised lunch.
Classroom activities will include both academic and therapeutic outcomes.
Students will be supported in taking an active role in their learning.
Parent(s)/ guardian(s) will be active participant(s) and will support their child in the program.

AMP is open to students within Winnipeg School Division on a referral basis.
All referrals are reviewed by the AMP steering committee and are subject to a screening process.
AMP applications are available through the school support services team.
