Horatio Alger National Entrepreneurial and Canadian Scholarships

Award Amount: Up to $10,000

Who can apply?

• A current grade 11 high school student progressing normally towards graduation or a current CEGEP student who plans to pursue a university education
• Student must be a Canadian citizen and have a minimum average of 70%

What will I have to do?

• Demonstrate critical financial need ($65,000 or lower adjusted gross family income is required)
• Be involved in co-curricular and community service activities
• Exhibit strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited non-profit public or private institution in Canada
• Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity

Retail Council of Canada Scholarship

Deadline: March 29, 2024

Award Amounts: One award worth $3,000, one award worth $2,000, sixteen awards worth $1,000

Who can apply?

• Currently working part-time or full-time within the retail industry
• Enrolled in or applying to a full or part-time retail, business, or marketing related program at a Canadian university or college next fall

What will I have to do?

• Submit the following:
  • Completed application and release form
  • Official transcript from the last two semesters of study
  • A reference letter (maximum 200 words) from a current employer that includes the following:
    • Applicant's demonstrated and continued commitment to the retail industry
    • Ways in which the applicant has distinguished him/herself from other employees
    • Reasons indicating why the applicant is deserving of this scholarship
    • Current employer/supervisor contact information

Who can apply?

• Female identifying students in grade 12 who have demonstrated an aptitude in an area of study that could lead to further education and/or careers in STEM, business, fine arts or underrepresented trades

What will I have to do?

• List any high school courses you have taken or are currently taking related to careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), business, fine arts or underrepresented trades
• A transcript of your most recent high school marks and proof of current enrolment in Grade 12 [photocopies are acceptable]
• A brief typewritten essay (maximum 1,500 words) to tell us about yourself. Include your short and long-term career goals; what makes you passionate about a future career in STEM, business, fine arts or underrepresented trades; your leadership in the school setting; your commitment to your community; a description of any barriers you may have had to overcome in order to succeed; and why you deserve this award.
• Up to two letters of support by people who can speak to your interest and aptitude in a future career in STEM, business, fine arts or underrepresented trades, your leadership in the school setting and/or your commitment to your community (teachers, counsellors, supervisors, community leaders, mentors, etc.)

Darryl Dacombe Memorial Scholarship & Ron Dixson Memorial Technical Scholarship

Award Amount: Up to $1,000 for the Darryl Dacombe Memorial Scholarship & $500 for the Ron Dixson Memorial Technical Scholarship

Who can apply?

• Manitoba residents aged 18 – 25
• Applicants must have diagnosed epilepsy or seizure disorder
• Must be a member in good standing of the Epilepsy and Seizure Association of Manitoba at the time of scholarship application. Membership is $10.00 and applications are available through the office
• Award holders must be prepared to enter or be currently enrolled in a post-secondary training institution in the academic year of application
• Evaluations will be based on a combination of the applicant's essay, grades, extracurricular activities, and financial need

  • An essay (1000 – 1500 words) on how epilepsy has affected your life

Who can apply?

• Must be Jewish
• Must be applying for, have been accepted into, or be continuing studies at university, college or another post-secondary program
• Must demonstrate to the satisfaction of the selection committee that they are in need of financial assistance in order to pursue the program
• Must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 or ‘C’ average
• Must be currently employed (part-time) and planning summer employment
• Must demonstrate that there is extreme financial need; must submit copies of their parent’s tax returns with the application

Mark Dickof Memorial Scholarship

Award Amount: 2 awards each worth $250

• One $250 award to a student or team of students in Urban Winnipeg
• One $250 to a student or team of students from rural/northern Manitoba

Who can apply?

• Open to any student or team of students (14-18) who can demonstrate positive leadership in addressing mental health and wellbeing among their peers through action, raising awareness, and or achieving greater sensitivity to and/or de-stigmatization of mental health and wellbeing

What will I have to do?

• Complete an essay of no longer than 500 words. The essay should outline how the applicant or applicants have engaged in actions, raised awareness, or fostered greater sensitivity and/or de-stigmatization in relation to mental health and wellbeing. This leadership can be directed either to their school community, their local community or their provincial community
• Include a brief letter of reference from a member of the community who can attest to the leadership and advocacy that has been demonstrated by the student or team of students in relation to mental health and wellness

John Evans Engineering Entrance Award

Who can apply?

• To be considered for the John Evans Entrance Award, applicants must:
  • Be a Canadian citizen or a Landed Immigrant with a Permanent Residence Card
  • Self-identify as female
  • Be a recent graduate or about to graduate from a Canadian high school and have applied to an accredited engineering program at a Canadian university
    • The selected applicant must show proof that they are enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited program before they are entitled to receive the first award allotment

What will I have to do? 

• Complete the Application, which includes:
  • The Application Form and Checklist
  • Applicant Declaration
  • Proof of Citizenship
  • Promoting Engineering: Write an informational letter addressed to the CEMF Judging Committee. Tell the judges about yourself, state why you think you would be a good ambassador for promoting engineering as a career for women and how you think your volunteer activities make you a strong role model for young women
  • Extracurricular and Community Activities: summarize your involvement as a volunteer in the community, extracurricular and other activities. Include your role, duration of the activity, frequency and any awards or recognition received. Applicants must be prepared to provide proof of any listed activity or awards if asked by the judges
  • Reference: Provide a reference from someone who can speak directly to your involvement in community and/or extracurricular
  • Letter of Support: Ask your high school official to write a letter of support confirming that you have recently graduated or are about to graduate from a Canadian high school
  • Voice Sound Clip: In a short voice recording (two minutes maximum), explain your passion for engineering
  • Presentation: Why I Chose to Become an Engineer- Your presentation should not exceed 15 minutes and it must be directed to a junior-high or high school level audience. Ensure it is engaging, exciting and inspiring since this is meant to make members of your audience want to enroll in engineering
