Grade 9 Dance

As we all first walked through the doors of the gym to start our very first dance class of the year many thoughts went through our heads.  We didn't know what to expect for our upcoming dance classes, but seeing many familiar faces helped. Sure we were all nervous but we were more excited to get started! As time progressed and dance classes went by we all began to get over the awkwardness and we became more comfortable around each other.

Early on in the year we were introduced to Sabrina Di Marco who is a dance teacher/choreographer at Studio 1.  Alongside Ms. Zaurrini, she taught us a variety of Street Jazz dance steps, which were incorporated into our routine performed at the winter concert. Aside from our regular dance classes, we also had the opportunity to experience different styles of dance. On November 12, 2013 we were given the chance to go to Sinclair Community Centre to learn ballroom dancing from a professional dancer, Frank Ferlaino. He taught us two simple Latin steps: Salsa and the Cha-Cha. The combination in which Frank taught us was also showcased at our winter concert.

As dance was coming to an end, one of the many experiences we had was learning a tap dance combination using a few simple steps. Even though we had to endure the pain of getting up on cold early mornings and having to arrive at school at the break of dawn, it was all worth it in the end! All of the memories made, the hard work and effort, along with the pre-performance jitters all paid off! Thank you to our fellow dancers for making this experience worthwhile; as well as to Ms. Zaurrini, Sabrina Di Marco and Frank Ferlaino for giving us this opportunity to experience the world of dance. They have given us the chance to achieve our goals over the past several months and have inspired us to be more confident in ourselves as performers.

Something to look forward to
There will be two events that dancers will be taking part in over the next few months. One of them will take place on February 26, 2013, in which all dance students will get the opportunity to see a performance by contemporary dancers. The second event will take place on March 10, 2013. Dancers will be attending the STEPZ dance workshop, which is a Winnipeg School Division initiative. We are all very excited and are counting down the days to these upcoming events!
