English 40S Comp

Students will examine a wide range of materials and will be required to participate through reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and thinking. The focus of this course will be on a variety of genres. This course will enable students to become independent thinkers and learners.
 

John B’s word on his class

The current English 40S Comprehensive course has units of study that focus on: Essay Writing, Film Studies, Shakespeare, Scriptwriting, Documentary Filmmaking and Modern Drama.
 
The Essay Unit provides students with an opportunity to strengthen their essay writing skills.
 
The Film Studies Unit screens and discusses a range of films of a variety of a themes relevant to young adults. Each film has a specific theme that the students will respond to.
 
The “Hamlet” Unit (this year’s Shakespeare offering) looks at two Big Ideas: 1) It’s a struggle to make meaning of our existence, and 2) We can all relate to Hamlet’s dilemma.
 
Students also have an opportunity to learn the basics of film scriptwiting, which will focus on the basic narrative structure. Students will use a professional screenwriting application to produce their work.
 
Another option for students is to create a documentary film. After researching their chosen topic, students will learn some basic fiming and editing skills in order to produce their final product.
 
This year’s Modern Drama is “The Glass Menagerie”, by Tennessee Williams. The class will study the play and then attend a permance at The Manitoba Theatre Centre.
