For Valour

The students of Room 38 were very fortunate to visit a very rare and unique exhibit at the Manitoba Museum. This exhibit features original Victoria Cross medals awarded almost 100 years ago to three Winnipeg soldiers who served in the First World War. The medals were awarded to Corporal Leo Clarke, Sergeant-Major Frederick William Hall, and Lieutenant Robert Shankland, who, at the time of their enlistment, had all resided in the same block of Pine Street in the west end of Winnipeg. In honour of the accomplishments of these Pine Street soldiers, a phenomenon that was unique to Canada, Pine Street was renamed Valour Road in the 1920s. Students from Room 38 have been learning about the Pine Street Boys and their great accomplishments.
