Teacher: K. Mendres

Throughout the year, the music program changes at David Livingstone Community School. I try to work as closely as possible with the classroom teachers, the art teacher and phys ed teacher to create music learning experiences that go along with what is being taught in other areas of the school. Last year, we learned music from Africa, had dance instruction for Jr. High students, attended a Winnipeg Symphony Concert, attended an Eagle and Hawk concert, sang songs, played games, learned to use instruments, performed in our own concerts and tried to make music in as many ways as possible.  My aim is to build on these past musical experiences, while giving the students new opportunities to explore the world of music.
While working in collaboration with classroom teachers, I also have a music curriculum that needs to be taught. You will find the general outcomes of this curriculum for Grades N-8 on the back of this handout.
Performing is always exciting for the students. You can look forward to seeing your child/children perform at the Remembrance Day Assembly, our Winter Concert,  our Volunteer Appreciation Event, our Awards Assembly, as well as during our Learning Celebrations. This year, we are also planning on showcasing DL’s talented student population in a Talent Show scheduled for May.
One new way students can participate in the Music program at DL is in our newly-formed Intermediate Choir for students in Rooms 10, 11 and 12. Our first performance will be at the Winter Concert and will hopefully perform for several other occasions throughout the year.
There are also Divisional music days that some students may participate in:
WSD Jr. High Choir (Grade 7 + 8 students) – November 17 + 18
Orff Days (Grade 4 students) – end of January
Honour Choir (Grade 5 + 6 students) – April and May
Thank-you for supporting your child’s musical development!
