Room 13

Hello Families,

My Name is Brian Clement I am your child's teacher for 2015/16. This is my 8th year of teaching. I have taught seven years of elementary, all at Sister MacNamara School. Previous to being a teacher, I worked with computers for 15 years. I ended my computer career as a Project Manager. I grew up and live in the North End. I went to school at Champlain Elementary and St. John's High School (Go Tigers).

English Language Arts (ELA):

Room 13 has a rich library, combined with the school library, Room 13 students will be able to read a wide variety of genres at a level of text that is suitable for enjoyment and learning. We will use Guided Reading to help students learn to incorporate what they read into their previous experiences. We will study the writing traits of Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency and Conventions. We will use the topics we study and life experiences to make writing an authentic task.

We will use drills to help us learn our basic facts. We will learn math vocabulary to help us think and talk like mathematicians. We will study place value, decimals, fractions, percentages, angles, graphing and probability.

Grade five and six is an exciting time as children start to be aware of the world around them. We will get to study: Space, Flight, Electricity, Forces and Weather. It is exciting to learn more about how things work.

Social Studies:

We will study First Nation's culture, how Canada came to be and some historic events of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

We will infuse Aboriginal themes in our daily work. We will discuss some explicit topics of First Nations people and experiences. We will try to live some First Nation's ideals like Humility, Respect, Wisdom, Truth, Honesty, Knowledge and Love. This may be challenging at times and I may call on you to help me learn more about your child.

I hope to earn your child's and your trust this year.
