OFF CAMPUS PROGRAM:
This program is an alternative program designed to result in improvement of individual students’ attendance and academic achievement. Grade 7, 8 and 9 students are referred from schools in the North District area of Winnipeg. The majority of referrals are students who have become disengaged in their learning and would benefit from a smaller class size and increased opportunities for individual interaction with instructional staff. The program is located at Isaac Newton School. Students attend classes from 9:00 am till 2:30 pm, and assist in making lunch for the class.
The academic portion is based on students’ individual needs and includes group work when appropriate. Students in Grade 7 and 8 focus on building Language Arts and Math skills. Grade 9 students can earn credits in Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, Art, Physical Education and Practical Arts. The performance component is primarily to improve student attendance and special skills. Regular attendance is a goal for each student. The program also includes opportunities to practice appropriate social skills, both inside and outside the classroom setting. Students who are successful in reaching individualized goals may be transitioned back to their home school.
