Grade 7 Homeroom 4 - Mrs. Johnson

Grade 7 ELA - Supported

The English Language Arts curriculum encompasses many different skills, including Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening and Representing.  The focus in the ELA supported class at Isaac Newton is on reading comprehension and writing at each student's level.  The students will be participate in the Leveled Literacy Intervention Program.  They will work in small groups with other students at the same level. They will be given many opportunities to practice their comprehension through reading aloud to an adult and discussing what they have read as well as completing short writing assignments based on what they have read.  Reading assessment will be ongoing throughout the year. The students will also use different strategies, such as The Daily Five and Words Their Way to help with comprehension. The writing component will consist of responding to different topics to ensure that each student is able to write a 5 sentence paragraph.  This will culminate in a 5 paragraph story on the topic of their choice at the end of the year. The focus will be on writing conventions, structure and word choice.

Grade 7 - Social Studies

The focus of the Grade 7 Curriculum is on Human Rights. The students will learn about different aspects of human geography under topics such as Universal Human Rights and Society and Culture.  The students will also learn mapping skills, where countries are located and how to use latitude and longitude to locate places in the world. They will use a variety of sources which can include text book reading, class discussions, notes, group work and research topics using computers.  Students are expected to complete all assignments and are responsible for any work that is missed due to absences.  The students will be assessed on knowledge and understanding of the material, research and communication, citizenship in the classroom and school as well as critical thinking (how they respond to certain texts). 

 

Grade 9 - ELA and RIT

The focus in Grade 9 ELA will be writing different types of text such as expository, narrative and opinion pieces.  They will learn how to write for different audiences along with the basic conventions needed to present an essay.  They will also learn about the Holocaust as part of the Human Rights component of the Curriculum.  The reading section of the program will focus on reading informational text such as a text book, newspaper articles and websites.  Students will be assessed on a variety of skills that include knowledge and understanding of the materials presented, research and communication skills and critical thinking skills.
