Grade 7 ELA- Supportive

The English Language Arts curriculum encompasses many different skills, including Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening and Representing.  The focus in the ELA supported class at Isaac Newton is on reading comprehension and writing at their level.  The students will be given many opportunities to practice their comprehension through reading aloud to an adult and discussing what they have read as well as completing short assignments where they read a passage and answer questions.  This will help the teacher assess their progress throughout the year.  They will also participate in novel studies throughout the year.  They will use different strategies, such as QAR (question, answer, response) and the Fab 4 (Predict, question, clarity and summarize) to help with comprehension. The writing component will consist of responding to different topics to ensure that each student is able to write a 5 sentence paragraph.  This will culminate in a 5 paragraph story on the topic of their choice at the end of the year. The focus will be on writing conventions, structure and word choice.
