Grade 7 Band
Students will begin learning rhythm, technique, and basic embouchure, as well as starting to develop repertoire. Instruments such as trumpet, flute, clarinet and trombone will be available.
Grade 8 Band
Grade 8 band will be for students involved in grade 7 band last year. The focus this year will be mastering new rhythms, honing technique, strengthening embouchure and building an ensemble. New, more difficult repertoire will be introduced and different instruments will be added, such as the alto saxophone and percussion. Band festivals, retreats, camps and competitions may be made available to students as part of grade 8 band.
Grade 9 Band
This course is for students who have previous experience playing in a band, Isaac Newton or elsewhere. Students will play harder repertoire and have a chance to audition for our new Jazz Band. We may play everything from Marches to Michael Jackson, Star Wars to Sousa. Different playing opportunities such as music festivals and an overnight trip are in the works for this year!
Jazz band is for auditioned students in grade 9 (possibly some advanced grade 8’s). This will be a smaller band with different repertoire. It will be comprised of electric guitar, bass guitar, full set of drums, saxes, trumpets, trombones, piano and other rhythm section players. We will be playing music dating back to the 1940’s through current jazz trends. A trip to the Brandon Jazz Festival as well as other competitions and other playing opportunities may be scheduled! Jazz Band practice is in the morning and lunch hours.
Grade 9 Guitar Option
Students get a chance to learn to play like their favourite rock stars! But first they have to learn theory, chords, tablature, finger plucking technique, strumming patterns and other aspects of playing guitar. They will study famous guitarists throughout history and learn to play their favourite songs as well as some classics.
Grade 9 Dance Option
Students will be able to learn various types of dancing such as Krump, Hip Hop, Bollywood, Modern, Tap, Ballet, Swing, and Jigging, as well as learn how to tumble roll and backflip! Bring your favourite songs in and we’ll work out a dance routine to it. You’ve seen us perform at assemblies, now come be part of the action.
