SPECIAL EDUCATION CENTRE (SEC) PROGRAM:
Students in SEC attend classes from 9:00 am till 3:00 pm with a supervised lunch period. Each student has an Individualized Education Plan, based on their own individual needs and competencies in each subject area, life skills areas, and socialization and behaviour.
Language Arts and Math programs are based on each student’s current academic level and abilities (ie. a student may be reading at a Grade 2.5 level, writing at a grade 1 level, working on grade 3 level multiplication skills, and Grade 1 level time skills). Each student will be assessed by the teacher through both observation and testing, and move forward to the next level when/as they are able in each curricular area In the Science and Social Studies areas, students will study curriculum topics from the Grade 7, 8, and 9 curriculum, adapted and modified to meet their individual learning needs. In Physical Education, the emphasis is on participation and appropriate behaviours, as well as learning and practicing specific skills such as volleyball, badminton, etc. from the Grade 7, 8 and 9 curriculum. When appropriate, students may be integrated into the Regular program classrooms in any subject area.
