School Resource Officer

Isaac Newton Staff would like to welcome back Constable Theriault to our school.  Constable Theriault is a School Resource Officer (SRO) otherwise known as a Police Officer.

SROs focus their efforts on crime prevention, education and maintaining the peace in schools by enhancing the visible law enforcement presence to ensure open lines of communication and building strong relationships with area youth, schools and communities.

What an SRO does for our school:

  • Respond to Emergency, Non-Emergency, Urgent and Non-Urgent school calls as per SRO protocol (see below)
  • Investigate minor incidents
  • Assist and follow-up on major incidents
  • Keep schools informed of community/police matters within the community
  • Contact school to activate LOCK-OUT based on nearby threats
  • Participate in resolving school and community issues
  • Gather police intelligence to assist community and schools
  • Discuss and answer questions in regard to police incidents and response with staff
  • Be available for students, parents, and caregivers to answer questions/give advice
  • Schedule and conduct student/parent meetings as required
  • Monitor youth in school that come into conflict with the law and work with staff/community supports to assist.
  • Attend re-entry meetings when applicable
  • Participate in HOLD AND SECURE and LOCK DOWN rehearsals
  • Participate in school events
  • Participate in staff PD days, building relationships with staff and remain in touch with school vision
  • Class visits and informal lectures
  • Recess visits to build relationships with younger students
  • Support school patrol programs
  • Liaise with outside agencies (CFS, MB Justice etc.)
  • Referrals to TURNABOUT program for youth under 12 yrs. of age
