Physical Education

Overview

All of the students in Grades 1-6 take part in the physical education program with a physical education teacher. The physical education program for Nursery and Kindergarten students is embedded into their classroom programming and taught by the classroom teacher. The philosophy of the physical education program is to give students the tools they need to participate in physical activity and sport, both for healthy life-long enjoyment and for sporting success at all levels. The expectation is that students are safe and respectful while participating in a variety of games and activities.

Students learn and practice the fundamental movement skills which are the basic building blocks for the development of physical literacy.

Physical Literacy: What exactly is it?

Physical literacy is the development of fundamental movement skills (running, skipping, galloping, hopping, jumping, ball bouncing, rolling a ball, kicking, striking, over and underhand throwing, catching and static and dynamic balance) that permit a child to move with confidence and control in a wide range of physical activities, rhythmic (dance) and sports. Physical literacy also includes the child's ability to "read" what is going on in an activity and react appropriately to those events.

Along with skill development, students are also working towards:

  • Showing a willingness to participate in a variety of physical activities.
  • Expressing enjoyment in a variety of movement experiences.
  • Appreciate that time, commitment and practice are required for skill development.
  • Appreciate the aesthetic and athletic values of movement.
  • Appreciate and respect diversity while participating in physical activity.
  • Appreciate and respect the natural environment while participating in physical activity.
