At J.B. Mitchell we aspire to challenge students of all capacities. As well as in-class enrichment opportunities, students can self-select for enrichment activities that include sports, choir, and academics. Every year J.B. Mitchell provides programming through the Artists in the School Program. In the past we have offered sessions on pottery to all students, we have had a writer in residence for the Grades 3 to 6. We also offer students in Grades 4-6 the chance to represent the school at the Manitoba Heritage Fair and the Concours D’art Oratoire.
At the school level, we have an active chess club for students in Grades 4 to 6. Students may also opt into an after school science club aimed at teaching and following the Scientific method to produce projects that will be entered into The Winnipeg School Division Science Fair or the Manitoba Schools’ Science Symposium.
Students are also selected for various enrichment activities. Renzulli's Three Ring Conception of Giftedness, where "above Average ability, creativity and task commitment" factor into selection. For active readers in Grades 5 and 6, the school participates in the Manitoba Young Readers’ Choice Awards. Students are offered the chance to read up to 18 titles written for readers aged 10-14 and then vote on their favorite book. We offer a Math Problem Solving Club for Grade 4 and 5 students who are interested in writing the International Math Kangaroo contest as well as working in groups to solve paper and hands on problems.
Every year two to four students from Grade 6 are chosen to participate in the Quantum Arts Program. This program, organized through the division, allows students to participate in Drama at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People, Dance at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School or Art at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
We also offer up to 10 students from Grade 5 and 6 the chance to participate in Saturday morning Art classes at the Winnipeg Art gallery.
We are also fortunate to be able to send students to programs at the Children’s Museum. These 5 to 6 session after school programs allow students in Grade 4 and 5 to excel in a variety of programs like dance, drama, photography, art, sculpture, robotics and video production.
