Sol Kanee Lecture on Peace and Justice
Grade 10 and 11 Asia
Pacific Studies Intermediate and Senior scholars attended the Sol Kanee Lecture
on Peace and Justice at the University of Manitoba on Wednesday October 2nd.
The featured speaker was
Anuradha Koirala, the founder of "Maiti Nepal", a non-governmental
organization dedicated ending Human Trafficking in Nepal and south Asia.
Before the lecture
began, students took advantage of the opportunity to take part in a massive
"Trivial Pursuit" style game promoting academic integrity organized
by the University of Manitoba Student Union.
The lecture featured
contributions from Member of Parliament Joy Smith, a national advocate of the
struggle to end Human Trafficking as well as members of the Nepali Student
Association who performed a ceremonial dance of welcome.
Ms Koirala's organization has succeeded in
rescuing more than 12 0000 women and children from forced prostitution,
indentured servanthood and slavery. She was named CNN's Hero of the Year in
2010. Students benefitted from her accumulated experiences and advice. Several
students have already launched an awareness and fundraising campaign in support
of Maiti Nepal. Asia Pacific students will take up the issue next spring during
their Role Play examination in March 2014, during a United Nations style debate
