Lights! Camera! Science!
The Chemistry and Physics of
Entertainment and Amusements
How do cream and strawberries become ice cream? What makes a roller coaster ride
so thrilling? Is the combination of sweets and screams a good thing? Visitors
to the IB G4 Science Project Conference learned the answers to these and many
other questions about the chemistry and physics of entertainment and amusements.
Kelvin’s Library was the site of the Conference,
held on the morning of February 19, 2014. The Conference was the culmination of
several weeks of research and investigation by Grade 11 and Grade 12 IB
Chemistry and Physics students, guided by Ms. Donna Labun, Ms. Michelle
Davidson, and Mrs. Alice Osborne. At the exhibit sessions, teams of students
answered questions about their projects, while others visited displays, posing
questions about the science behind the investigations, evaluating exhibits, and
providing summaries of each other’s work.
In addition, several science classes visited and
evaluated the exhibits. Students talked to students, explaining processes, and
answering questions. It was an authentic learning experience for all who
attended, for teachers as well as for students.
Thanks to all
the hard-working students and teachers who made this event possible. We look
forward to next year’s IB G4 Science Conference.
