Formal instruction begins at the grade 1 level. Students in grades 1, 2 and 3 receive 20 minutes of instruction 3 out of 6 days. The goals and objectives of this program are: exposure to the French language; to foster a positive attitude toward French; and to develop an awareness of the French culture. Students in grades 4, 5 and 6 receive 30-40 minutes of instruction 3 out of 6 days. Speaking, listening, reading and writing are skills being fostered. More emphasis is placed on speaking, listening in Grade 4 and in Grades 5 and 6 all skills are emphasized.
Besides the formal program, songs, games and skits are incorporated into the program. Culturally the students get involved in the Festival du Voyageur, and when finances permit, French plays and music are brought into the school for the students’ enjoyment.
As often as possible, students are encouraged to speak French in real or simulated situations so that the learning of French becomes a more meaningful experience.
