February Newsletter 2016, Room 19
In late January we started our Family Life unit by beginning a read-aloud of the novel 'George,' written by Alex Gino. As part of the Family Life curriculum talks about types of families, and along with the Winnipeg School Division's anti-homophobia initiative, the book 'George' - published in 2015 - is a relevant and timely story for younger readers.
In February, we will work with a local author during our first Engaging Fusion sessions (which used to be Learning Through the Arts). Karin Adams will share with us her methods for fiction writing over four well-planned lessons. We are looking forward to working with her and examples of Karin's work can be found at www.karinadams.com.
In other academic areas, we are working on daily math activities which are levelled to help each group of students succeed in their area of need. We are continuing our Maintaining a Healthy Body unit in Science and will learn about the provinces in Social Studies. Finally, I'd like to thank all those parents and guardians for supporting their child in Room 19's homework program. Assignments are brief – twenty minutes of reading per night along with a short math or written activity – so not to create more work and homework-related tension during those few hours of family time each evening.
