Queenston School Speed Skating Club

Queenston School is offering an opportunity for the grade 4, 5 & 6 students to participate in our Speed Skating Club, which again will be entered into the Winnipeg School Division/Manitoba Speed Skating Association's Speed Skating Races on Wednesday Feb. 28 beginning at 4:30pm. The races are held at the MTS Centre. We will race against many other schools from the Winnipeg School Division in the format of friendly competition.

We would like to say thanks to Corydon Community Centre, River Heights site, for the use of their indoor ice for us to practice. Our Practices will be from 12:00 - 1:00pm and we will require drivers to help assist us in getting all of our skaters to practice.  The practice dates are as follows:

Wednesday, January 31st Corydon CC/River Heights (Indoor) Time: 12:00-1:00 pm
Wednesday, February 7th Corydon CC/River Heights (Indoor) Time: 12:00-1:00 pm
Wednesday, February 14th Corydon CC/River Heights (Indoor) Time: 12:00-1:00 pm
Wednesday, February 21st Corydon CC/River Heights (Indoor) Time: 12:00-1:00 pm

The club welcomes grade 4, 5, & 6 students to attend, regardless of their skating ability. The school division wishes us to notify parents that due to time constraints at the Speed Skating Races, skaters should meet a benchmark time for completing a measured distance to compete in those races. Queenston School has never had a student not go to the races because of the division's benchmark time.

During the practice sessions, the coaches assisted the students with the skills necessary to participate in the skating races. We would like to say thanks to parent and staff drivers who shuttled the students to and from the rink.

As these races are a team event, teams were made of three or four skaters who each skate one lap at the MTS Centre. The teams are placed in one of four ability categories based on the coach's experience from previous years, so each team is in a heat with other teams of similar ability. We thank all the parents who attended the races, as it was quite an enjoyable event for all involved.

Thanks again skaters and we look forward to working with many of you next year.  Please click on the link for the permission slip.
