Dear Parents and Guardians,
My name is Oksana Melnyk and I will be your child's teacher this year. Below, is a brief description of the required subjects your child will be learning in grade 2/3.
Math- Students will participate in the school wide Jump Math program. It is a program dedicated to building each child's love and understanding of math concepts. The program focuses on helping students understand and master the grade-level standards they will be assessed on such as Number Sense and Problem-Solving. Students will be assessed using the Winnipeg School Division Nursery to Grade 6 Mathematical Assessment Learning Pathway, as well as assessments within the Jump Math program and teacher observation of in-class assignments and activities.
Language Arts- The focus will be on acquiring language and literacy skills through listening, speaking, viewing and representing, in reading and writing. Strategies and tools include: morning message, journal writing, guided reading, novel study and spelling. Students decoding and comprehensions skills will be assessed in reading using Fountas and Pinnel Benchmark Assessment. In Writing, the 6 Traits Writing Continuum will be used to assess, ideas, sentences fluency, organization and other skills. Various assignments, quizzes, discussions, peer interaction and teacher observations will also be used to assess learning growth.
Ukrainian Language Arts- The focus for Grade 2/3 will be on increasing students' acquisition and use of Ukrainian vocabulary and understanding of stories. Presentations will be used as a way to help them share their knowledge and use their imaginations. They will be assessed using writing tasks evaluating their ability to identify words, use them in a sentence, and spell correctly and use proper punctuation. Ukrainian Language learners will be assessed throughout the year to determine how their language proficiency is developing.
Science- Students will participate in hands-on tasks covering topics such as soils and plants, animal life cycles, and animal adaptation. Assessments will be in the form of teacher observations, performance tasks, quizzes, and self and peer evaluation/ feedback.
Social Studies- Students will explore Canadian Geography, the History of Manitoba and the North, and Ukrainian Culture and Traditions. Both subjects will be assessed using in class assignments, unit reviews, hands-on projects and teacher observations.
Health- Your child will participate in the "Kids in the Know" and "Second Step" programs. They will learn about caring for their bodies by keeping active and eating healthy foods. Students will learn and practise safety skills by becoming aware of how to answer the phone and door safely and who to trust in the neighbourhood such as the police or Block Parents. Students will be assessed using in class assignments, unit reviews and hands-on projects.
Art- Students will explore drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and fabric arts. They will use various techniques to develop their creations. Your child will be assessed on their ability to interpret and communicate ideas visually, appreciate the cultural aspects of art and relate art to their life.
Homework- Your child will receive homework daily and may include math, reading and/or Ukrainian Language Arts. I will keep you updated on the various activities as they come up.
Extracurricular- There will be many extracurricular activities available for your student at Ralph Brown School. Some of the activities are basketball, soccer, volleyball and running club.
