P6 - Grade 7,8


My name is Mira Demko and I am very excited to continue working with grade 7/8 English Ukrainian Bilingual Program students.

I will be teaching Ukrainian Language Arts, Ukrainian Social Studies, Health and Art.

I believe that our time here will be well spent.  

In Ukrainian Language Arts/Українська мова students will practice essential skills: speaking, reading, writing and listening.

This school year we will be exploring 4 main units:

  1. Спорти/ Sports
  2. Ласкаво просимо в Україну/ Travel to Ukraine!
  3. Смачного!Українська кухня/ Ukrainian Cuisine
  4. Видатні Українці/ Famous Ukrainians


Our English Ukrainian Bilingual Program students will have a great opportunity to build repertoire of Ukrainian vocabulary, incorporate all new words into their speech, learn grammar and sentence structure.

Throughout the school year, students will use Ukrainian language in a variety of contexts, e.g.: playing games, using Duolingo or other available applications/resources to develop vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation skills. They will be watching Ukrainian sport programs, listening to Ukrainian music, reading books or magazines and meeting people from Ukrainian community in Winnipeg.

We will also celebrate main Ukrainian special days such as St. Nicolas Day or Easter.

All students are encouraged to participate in our school events and activities.

At the end of each unit, students will work on projects and presentations worth 30% of the final grade.

There will be also a final exam worth 20% of the final grade.

  • final exam 20%
  • portfolio and assignments 20%
  • projects and presentations 30%


    In Social Studies/Суспільна наука we will study geography, practice mapping skills and "travel" around the world. Over the course we will learn in detail about two countries of the world.


    This year we will cover 4 units:
  1. World Geography
  2. Global Quality of Life
  3. Ways of Life in Asia, Africa, or Australasia
  4. Human Impact in Europe or the Americas

Other focus in class will be Human Rights and Citizenship.

 Additionally, we will be studying Ukrainian history, geography and traditions.

Students will be using the People and Places textbook, websites, work sheets prepared by a teacher, and other sources of information.

There will be a final exam worth 20% of the final grade.

  • portfolio and assignments 20%
  • projects and presentations 30%

    Homework will include:
  • Unfinished assignments, reviews for quizzes and tests, projects
  • New vocabulary – students are expected to learn new vocabulary
  • Reading short texts/magazines
  • Practicing Ukrainian handwriting


    In Health we will be focusing on well-being based on Mind Up program, personal safety based on Kids in the Know program, and Family Life program.

    We are going to learn how to manage stress, set personal boundaries, establish healthy relationships and avoid high risk situations.

    Some topic areas which will be addressed include:
  • Identifying Feelings
  • Personal Boundaries
  • Relationships (Friendship, Family)
  • Internet Safety
  • Getting Out of Unhealthy Situations
  • Dilemmas and Issues Affecting Adolescents

Over the course, students will be provided with the tools and strategies to increase their personal safety and to deal with high risk situations.

Health marks will be incorporated into the Physical Education report card marks.

Assessment may include: observation checklists, journal logs, worksheets, portfolios, group and class discussion, posters, collages, oral presentations, self and peer assessment.

Visual Art

In Art classes students will have the opportunity to express themselves and communicate in many different ways. They will work with various materials, tools and art techniques.  Students will have a chance to develop their own style and create their own art.

We will also integrate art to the Grade 8 Social Studies curriculum and Ukrainian Language Arts. Students will be introduced to the visual arts and architecture in different time and places. They will have opportunities to create dioramas, craft and express themselves.

Assessment will measure participation, cooperation and understanding of concepts, as well as creativity, and will be based on: daily observations, work samples and anecdotal notes.
