I Love to Read month is upon us once again! We have some new events this year.  Every Friday, Mr. Blain does ‘Book Trivia’ in which he reads a page from two stories and the younger kids and the older kids have to guess what the titles of the books are.  Winners are announced and win a prize!  Hint: Mr. Blain loves Robert Munsch and Dr. Suess!

Every Wednesday is Drop Everything and Read!  This means that at any point in the day, there will be an announcement telling everyone to stop what they are doing and read a book! You need to remember to bring a book with you almost everywhere you go like gym and music because you might have to stop and read at any time!

The school is also participating in River Elm Picks!  If you have a book that you think others would enjoy, you can have your picture taken with the book, and write down why you like the story, and recommend that others read it.  The River Elm Picks will be posted on bulletin boards all over the school.

This year we are hosting two special days called 'Read with Me'.  If you have a parent, grandparent, older sibling, guardian, etc, that wants to sign up and come read to you during school hours they can come to River Elm on January 18th, or 19th to read you a story. They need to sign up for a time slot on a sheet posted just outside the library.  There might just be a special treat for you!

We had our Kick Off I Love to Read Assembly on February 2nd in the gym.  On this day, we listened to a well-loved story called Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. Then we answered some trivia questions about it.  Students that got correct answers got to pop a balloon for a prize! We also listened to a really fun song called "Gotta Keep Reading!" It was really fun.Some teachers also dressed up as characters from books.

Do you have a book at home that you've read, like, a million times! Guess what? You can bring it to River Elm School and trade it in for another book! That's right! River Elm is participating in a book swap this year.  All you have to do is bring in a gently used book that you no longer want, and you will get to choose a different book that someone else has brought in.  It's a great opportunity for you to share a book that you love, while getting a new story of your own.

On February 9th we hosted a special day called 'Read my Shirt' day! Every student that wore a shirt with words on it got to be entered in a draw for a prize! There were two winners - Jayce from room 102, and Logan from room 201. Congratulations boys!

This year we have added an event called R-E-A-D-O. It's kind of like BINGO, but to check off your square, you have to read a cetain kind of book.  Examples are a science book, or a newspaper.  Talk to your teacher about what happens when you complete your whole READO page!

We have so many events taking place for I Love to Read month at River Elm this year! Can't wait to see you all reading! Check back here for updates and pictures!  Don't forget to take a look at our 'Leaders of Readers' display by the gym!
