Basic French Program

 

 

Grades 1 to 3


 
 
 

The goal of the Basic French program is to encourage the learning of French as a means of communicating and leading to enhanced learning in both the student’s primary language and in related areas of cognitive development and knowledge acquisition.

 
 
 

The purpose of early introduction to French is to encourage a favorable attitude and to expose the students to the sound system through interesting and pleasurable activities.  At the grade 1 – 3 level the students are encouraged to imitate the sounds they hear in their activities, songs, and comptines.  There is little emphasis on the acquisition of structures or vocabulary beyond a basic minimum.  Students are introduced to French sounds, vocabulary and some sentence patterns.  Global comprehension is sought for many of the activities that students are engaged in and a positive attitude is sought toward the French language and culture. 

 
 
 

The following are some concepts that may be covered throughout the year depending on the interests and needs of the students as well as opportunities to introduce co-curricular concepts that are presented in their other areas of study.

The goal of the Basic French program is to encourage the learning of French as a means of communicating and leading to enhanced learning in both the student’s primary language and in related areas of cognitive development and knowledge acquisition.

 
 
 

The 4 – 6 Basic French program offers students opportunities to further develop French language skills, learn about French culture and become more efficient learners.  They will be involved in various activities that will expand their linguistic abilities via songs, games, plays and many experiential/communicative activities.  They will build on the knowledge and skills acquired in previous years and be exposed to new ideas and concepts.
