NURSERY/KINDERGARTEN - Play With A Purpose!
The program is geared to provide social interaction and to develop students' math, reading, social, and school readiness skills, and language development through play, activity/learning centres, and exposure to children’s literature. The classes are multi-aged with nursery and kindergarten students grouped together. Instruction is child centered and creativity is fostered. Emphasis is on the development of the whole child.
Children who will be four years old by December 31 and reside within the boundaries of the Winnipeg School Division No. 1 can be registered for the Nursery program. Children who will be five years old by December 31 can be registered for the Kindergarten program. Kindergarten children out of the Division will be accepted only if there is space available and if they require no additional special resources.
Parents/guardians may register their children at the school office after the Winter Break for the school term beginning the next September. Your child’s birth certificate or Manitoba Health Certificate may be used as proof of your child’s birth. Please bring either at time of registration

By the end of grade six, students should be able to demonstrate the following:
1. Understand the basic structures and vocabulary taught.
2. Recognize the differences between various sounds and intonations.
3. Follow directions given in French.

2. Participate in oral practice with confidence.
3. Express themselves in simple language.

1. Copy structures and vocabulary taught orally and already met in a reading context.
1. Discuss the existence of French culture at local, regional and national levels (i.e. French restaurants, newspapers, entertainers, etc.)
2. Describe aspects of French culture (i.e. celebrations, feast days, food etc.)
3. Appreciate similarities and differences between French and student's own culture.
Our music program includes an exciting combination of singing, playing percussion instruments, body percussion, Orff, Kodaly, recorder, ukulele, listening, language development, movement, improvisation, music literacy, and an appreciation of the arts. Opportunities are available throughout the school year to perform for others at monthly assemblies, the Remembrance Day Assembly, Winter and Spring Special Events, and at other special events. There is also choir for both the primary and intermediate students.
For many children music experiences become a particular source of pleasure and self-esteem; for others an opportunity for musical expression through group participation. Though children’s musical abilities may vary greatly, all children benefit from a wide range of musical experiences.
The Physical Education program at Rockwood School is based on the Manitoba K-12 Physical Education Curriculum Guide. The PE/Health Curriculum is designed to give today’s students the knowledge, skills and attitudes they will need to lead physically active and healthy lives. The Curriculum is divided into five general learning outcomes (GLO’s).
Movement – the student will be able to demonstrate competency in selected movement skills, and knowledge of movement development and physical activities with respect different types of learning experiences, environments and cultures
Fitness Management – the student will demonstrate the ability to develop and follow a personal fitness plan for lifelong physical activity and well-being.
Safety – the student will demonstrate safe and responsible behaviours to manage risks and prevent injuries in physical activity participation and in daily living.
Personal/Social Management – the student will demonstrate the ability to develop self-understanding, to make health-enhancing decisions, to work cooperatively and fairly with others, and to build positive relationships with others.
Healthy Lifestyle Practices – the student will demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions for healthy living related to personal health practices, active living, healthy nutritional practices, substance use and abuse, and human sexuality.
Specific Learning Outcomes (SLO’s) in the curriculum are divided up and taught by their physical education teacher, and/or classroom teacher.
The Physical Education Program is divided into Primary (K-3) and Intermediate (4-6) sections. These separate programs focus on the needs and abilities of the students at their particular stage of development. These goals and objectives can be met by a variety of activities in a well-balanced and varied program.

In addition to the classroom program are special activities such as dance festivals, running clubs, soccer, volleyball, softball teams, field days, basketball, winter activity days, and intra-mural sports for grades 1-6.
Learning Assistance Centre
The Learning Assistance Centre program of the Winnipeg School Division is a Special Education Program for children who require a closely supervised, highly structured setting to overcome behavioural and emotional problems. There are strict criteria for admission. The Rockwood L.A.C. program provides a classroom for children ages 7-11 years and has staff-child ratio (1:3.5) for a maximum of seven students. The program also includes a resource/treatment support component. The overall goal of the program is to assist the child to develop appropriate constructive social/interpersonal behaviour, self confidence and academic competency in order to return to the home school and an educational program as close as possible to the mainstream.
