On the afternoon of Friday Nov 24th 2017, Sisler held a Holodomor Commemoration Ceremony in the Sisler Library, organized by Ms O Petryshyn.
The event was attended by over 200 students, teachers, administration, and guests.
Two senior students, Tim Ofiaza, who was born in the Philippines and Khrystyna Doskoch, who was born in Ukraine, led the ceremony. Both are former students of Ms O Petryshyn.
Honourable speakers included Dr Bogdan Klid, of the University of Alberta, Gene Kirichenko, a Sisler alumnus, and Irka Balan, a child survivor of the Holodomor. Speakers were invited by Ms O Petryshyn.
During that week, students were able to learn about the Holodomor by viewing the library's display case, with period artifacts & documents
arranged by Ms O Petryshyn.
Sisler's own 2009 publication, Sisler Remembers, was on display during the week and featured at the Ceremony.
Thank you to Sisler's Administration, the Winnipeg School Division, the students of Sisler, the Ukranian Canadian Congress, the University of Alberta, and finally to Orysya Petryshyn, teacher/organizer.
