Child Care

 


 

This is a course for those who have an interest in working with infants, pre-schoolers and school-age children. The focus is on learning the basic skills to help children develop physically, emotionally, socially and cognitively.

• child development
• family dynamics
• health, nutrition and safety
• history and philosophy of child care
• causes and signs of child abuse
• inter-personal communication
• self understanding
 

Grade 11

(CHCV30) First year students learn methods of guiding children’s behavior, observation and report writing techniques, art and drama work-shops as well as daycare placement. 4 Credits
 

Grade 12

(CHCV40) In the second year, students explore areas of child abuse, self understanding, family dynamics, developing curriculum, inter-personal communication as well as taking part in two practicum placements. 4 Credits
 

Child Care Opportunities

Certified child care workers are needed in:
• day care at churches
• day care at community centres
• day care in private homes (as nannies)
• day care at schools
 
With further training, child care workers can find employment in the areas of:
• infant care
• residential programs
• social work
• special needs care(handicapped children)
• teaching
• youth care
 
To obtain further training in child care, students can attend Red River Community College and will receive partial credits for the studies that they have completed at Tec-Voc.
