Grades 3-4

Language Arts

Our Literacy program covers the five general outcomes of English Language Arts through activities in listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing.  The main goals for our students are to explore thoughts, feelings, and ideas, respond to a variety of texts, manage ideas and information, and celebrate and build community.

We participate in learning activities involving Daily 5 and CAFÉ, Tyner word work, guided reading, plays and drama, home reading, and reading buddies.

The four strands in mathematics are numbers, patterns and relations, shape and space, and statistics and probability. We want our students to use math to solve problems, communicate and reason mathematically, and exhibit a positive attitude towards math.

The Grade 3 Science program focuses on Structures and Materials, Growth and Changes in Plants, Soils in the Environment and Forces that Attract and Repel.

The Grade 4 Science program focuses on four clusters including Rocks and Minerals, Habitats and Communities, Light and Sound.

Social Studies

The Grade 3 Social Studies curriculum includes Connecting with Canadians, Exploring the World, Communities of the World and Exploring an Ancient Society.

The Grade 4 Social Studies curriculum includes the Geography of Canada, Canada's North, Living in Canada and Manitoba, as well as the History of Manitoba.

During our computer time, we work on reading and math goals using Raz Kids, Tumble Books and Xtra Math, keyboarding, electronic communication skills, research skills, and internet safety.

The health units we will cover this year include consideration and respect for others, setting long and short-term goals, healthy decision making, and conflict resolution. We use the Mind-Up Program© to foster healthy minds and classrooms. Your child participates in 4 gym classes per week, and many intramural options.

The Grade 3 students will be learning about Drug Education and the Grade 4 students will also be learning about Family Life.

To help your child at home, please be sure to read with your children for 20 minutes every night to help with their learning goals!
