Ms. Madden's Grade 3

My name is Ms. Madden and 2017-2018 marks my seventh year as a teacher. I joined the William Whyte family last spring, and I am so excited to be a part of your child's journey into learning and discovery! Throughout the school year we will focusing on many different areas.

In English Language Arts, we will be continuing the Read to Me program with a strong focus on writing, and comprehension. We will be working towards peer and self-editing with a focus on critically examining our own writing pieces, to allow for growth and to help develop our unique individual voice and style.

In Math we will continue along our learning pathway, practicing our number sense, mental math, patterns and relations, shape and space, statistics and probability. All of these different areas lead to a better understanding of numeracy and the connections they have to the world around us.

In Social Studies we will be building on the Grade 2 curriculum of community and involvement into the larger picture of what it means to be a Canadian and a global citizen. We will introduce world geography and enrich our appreciation of global diversity, as we explore communities and cultures around the world, including an ancient society. We will work to discover the connections linking various communities, past and present.

In Science we will explore plants and living things, including local plants, properties of soil, the importance of plants to the environment as well as the significance of food, shelter and medicine to humans that they provide. We will be using the design process to create, manipulate, and test various materials when creating structures. We will learn that the strength and stability of structures depends upon the material used and how it is configured and joined together. We will also be building on previous years' units on push and pull by exploring the forces that attract and repel without direct contact such as magnetism, gravity and static electricity.

In Health we will explore personal and lifestyle management, including how to set both long and short-term goals. We will also continue to explore healthy lifestyle practices and safety, both in the school and in the community.
