Ms. Cook's Grade 1/2

Welcome to Grade 1/2!

About Ms. Cook

My name is Karen Cook. I will be the teacher for Grade 1/2 for the mornings. My focus with the students will be on their literacy, Social Studies, and Health.

I have been teaching since 2011. My interests are raising butterflies, art, Cree language, fostering animals (such as bunny rabbits), and of course, teaching and learning!

My home community is Grand Rapids or Misipawistik First Nation. I have a husband named Richard, a 10 year old daughter named Eadie, as well as two cats and a foster bunny.

Daily attendance is extremely important for learning. Please help your child attend regularly to maximize their learning potential. If your child is unable to attend, please contact the office at 204-589-4313 prior to 9:15 am.

Behavior Expectations

Students are expected to follow our school’s rules and to practice K.I.N.D. -  our school motto:

K – I keep my hands and feet to myself

I – I am a learner

N – I nurture myself, others, and my environment

D – I always do my best!

Reading for 20 min.+ at home is recommended for students to maintain skills they’ve learned at school. Students will be bringing books home for Home Reading every week. Please check their book bags and make sure they read their books and fill in their Home Reading Log. (Reading at bed time is a good way to extend their reading practice at home!)

Communication between home and the classroom teacher is essential to helping your child’s school experience be a positive and productive one. I look forward to working with you, the primary caregiver in your child’s life. Please feel welcome to contact me at any time through e-mail, by phone, or in person. I will do my best to keep you informed of your child’s progress and celebrate their successes with you. We always welcome extra help, so if you are interested in volunteering, please contact the school.

Please make sure your child is dressed for the current weather. We will be going out for recess unless the weather is extremely cold. Also, students are asked to remove headwear, including hats and hoodies, when they are inside the school. Please check the lost and found (located at the back/west staircase) regularly for items of clothing your child may have left behind.

The school has a lunch program if your child needs to stay for lunch. Please see the newsletter or call/visit the school office for information.

To maximize our learning time, we will be having periodic “class celebrations” to recognize birthdays. We will inform parents when we have one coming up.

Dreambox & Raz Kids

Please keep an eye on your child’s Friday Folder for log in information for Dreambox and Raz Kids. These programs can be accessed on a computer, tablet or phone so your child can practice reading and math skills outside of school hours. These are excellent programs for supporting their learning at home.
