Hello William Whyte families! Thanks so much for checking out the Counselling Corner! I am so honoured to be this years School Counsellor. Each month I will be updating this webpage so that you know about the wonderful social emotional skills your children are learning which is necessary for them to live a positive and productive life.
In September we introduced many different initiatives but our biggest one was the acronym KIND, which you probably noticed on the front bulletin board. We want to teach our students to be kind to themselves, to others and to the world around us. We led off our assembly discussing different ways to be kind and teachers began to implement the SECOND STEP program. This program teaches students from grades K–5 to develop their social-emotional skills—including making friends, managing emotions, and solving problems—to set them on the path for social success and academic readiness.
Another thing that is new this year is the development of the calming corner in each classroom. Teachers were given many different self regulation calming tools for the children to use. Everyone gets angry/frustrated from time to time and now students will have a place to calm down and help him/her make a positive choice in order to get back to learning.
COME ON OUT TO THE COMMUNITY ROOM ON OCTOBER 18TH FROM 10:00-12:00 IN ORDER TO CHECK OUT THE CALMING KITS BEING USED IN YOUR CHILD'S CLASSROOM AS WELL AS COMPLETE A CRAFT THAT YOU CAN USE AS A CALMING TOOL WITHIN YOUR HOME.
Last, but not least, in October we are focusing on changing mindset within the classroom. What is this you might ask? Well check this out!
