The Winnipeg School Division partners with Insurance to provide all international students with comprehensive health insurance coverage. Insurance is mandatory for all international students, regardless of their duration of study. Insurance coverage begins on the day students leave their home country and insures students in all other countries except their home country.

The cost of health insurance is $350 CAD per year, regardless of the students' duration of study Winnipeg. 

Students who hold a valid study permit for six months or longer, are also eligible for Manitoba Health. See the Government of Manitoba at  for more information. Canada Insurance Plan

Students studying for less than 6 months, who do not have a valid study permit are covered under the Canada Plan for new and emergent accidents and illnesses.

This includes:

  • Hospital and medical insurance
  • Prescription drugs
  • Extended health benefits
  • Accidental death & dismemberment Canada Top Up Plan

Students studying for more than 6 months with a valid study permit are covered under both Manitoba Health and the Canada Top Up Plan for new and emergent accidents and illnesses. 

For routine doctor and hospital visits, please present your Manitoba Health card first. The Manitoba Health plan includes:

  • Physicians' services that are medically required
  • Hospital services
  • X-ray and laboratory services in approved facilities when ordered by a physician
  • And other basic health care services

In addition, the Canada Top Up Plan provides added coverage not provided by Manitoba Health, such as paramedical services, transportation, repatriation and family visits. For more information, please visit
