Dear Parent/Guardian:

Winnipeg School Division is planning now for the return of students to in-classroom lessons this fall. We are following direction provided by Manitoba Government Public Health (PH) Guidelines that contain social distancing protocols.

One of the significant issues with social distancing is transportation. Based on the latest Guidelines for Transportation to Schools issued by the Manitoba Government the number of children that could be transported on each bus is extremely limited. The guidelines allow for one child per seat therefore we estimate that a bus that normally carries 77 students could carry only 24 students to ensure appropriate social distancing while they are aboard.

We share this concern with you so that you may consider other options for transporting your child to school starting in September. Personal vehicles, taxis and city transit are all options we ask you to consider for your own situation. Active transportation such as riding bicycles may also be a timely consideration, at schools where there is a space for locking bikes. Above all else, we do not want you to be surprised later this summer should school transportation not be possible for your child, due to social distancing protocols.

We will update you as further direction from the Province is provided. We continue to work on different plans with hopes of transporting first, our most vulnerable students to school and second, aII other bussed students. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work through this developing situation.

Yours truly,

Mr. Navinder Basra
Director of Finance & Assistant Secretary-Treasurer
