Unity Gala 2026: A Celebration of Black Achievement
April 21, 2026 News Story
Drumming set the rhythm, conversation filled the room, and the aroma of spice welcomed guests into Tec Voc High School’s Hornet Dome. Winnipeg School Division’s recent inaugural Unity Gala brought the community together to celebrate Black achievement, identity, and belonging.
Nearly 400 attendees gathered, including honouree students and their families, staff, performers, and community partners. There was a shared sense that this evening mattered. It was a celebration and a reflection of the division’s commitment to creating spaces where everyone feels seen, valued, and connected.
At the reception, guests mingled and took in student work from various schools, browsed books by Black authors, and engaged in displays of local Black history. Tec Voc’s culinary students prepared a menu inspired by the Caribbean, offering hibiscus iced tea, jerk chicken skewers, doubles, and beef patties.
Attendees then moved to the theatre, where the evening took on a deeper focus. Organized by the Black Experience Collective, the program uplifted student voice and talent. Performances filled the stage with rhythm, movement, and song, while student and alumni speakers shared reflections shaped by lived experience and hope for the future.
At the heart of the evening, spirit awards recognized students, staff, and an ally whose contributions continue to shape their school communities. Each name called was met with pride and jubilation.
