Treaty 5 Negotiations, 1875

Students of Histoire canadienne immersed themselves in Canada's relations with First Nations during a three-day role play recently. Each student was assigned to portray a real-life historical figure who lived in or journeyed to Rossville (Norway House) in September of 1875, when Lieutenant Governor Alexander Morris and provincial Minister James MacKay signed Treaty No. 5 with Chief David Rundle and Councillors Coustatag, Cochrane and Papasekwanape. The students discussed, debated and disputed issues like the exclusion of 'Métis', the relocation of the community to Fisher River, hunting and fishing rights, annuities and education. The role play is part of a multi-focal look at Canada's First Nations in the context of Canadian society.
