The Board of Trustees of Winnipeg School Division is pleased to announce that Wolseley School will officially be renamed Little Bluestem School, effective for the 2026/27 school year.

The school community overwhelmingly supported the name Little Bluestem School, which is named after a native prairie grass found along Omand’s Creek in the Wolseley neighbourhood.

The new name honours the deep roots of the neighourhood, where bison once fed on the native grass and Métis communities long thrived. The name reflects a connection to the land and the enduring relationship between plants, animals, and people.

“This renaming process reflects what public education is all about — listening, learning, and working together,” said Kathy Heppner, Chair of the Winnipeg School Division Board of Trustees. “The Board is grateful to the students, families, staff, and community members who contributed their voices. The new name honours both the place the school calls home and the learning that happens inside its walls.”

The new name was selected from a shortlist that was developed through an extensive community-led process involving students, families, staff, and community members. The new name reflects strong public engagement and thoughtful consideration of the school’s values, learning environment, and neighbourhood identity.

“The depth of learning and engagement throughout this process has been truly meaningful,” said Matt Henderson, Superintendent of Winnipeg School Division. “Student voice was at the heart of this work — learning about history, culture, and community, and helping shape a name that reflects who they are and what they value.”

More information about timelines, signage, and celebrations will be shared with the school community in the months ahead.
