Winnipeg is not just known for its rich history and cultural diversity; it has also become a welcoming home for international students worldwide. The Winnipeg School Division (WSD) is excited to host 179 students from 22 countries this year, marking a significant step in its International Education Program.

International students from various countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Nigeria, Vietnam and others, have shown remarkable courage in moving to a new country and a new city. They are spread across 25 WSD schools, creating a vibrant mix of cultures in the classrooms.

For many students, choosing to study in Canada was a thoughtful decision. Victor from France shares his excitement: "I have always wanted to experience North America. Canada appealed to me because I could choose the city, and the winter weather looked exciting." His enthusiasm for experiencing snow for the first time reflects the curiosity many international students have about Canadian winters.

Sara from Italy also chose Canada for its unique blend of cultures. "I wanted to discover a different world while feeling secure," she explains. Sara enjoys staying with a Filipino family, which allows her to learn about multiple cultures simultaneously. "I love being in a Filipino host family because I'm discovering new things every day," she adds.

Mia, from Vietnam, was influenced by her teacher's recommendation to study in Manitoba. "My teacher said that Canada is amazing, especially Manitoba, a super multicultural province," Mia shares. She is excited about trying winter activities like skiing and skating, hoping to make the most of her time in Canada.

The WSD International Education Program aims to enrich these students' experiences. Aaron Benarroch, the program director, emphasizes creating a supportive environment. "We're thrilled to welcome these students and help them immerse themselves in Canadian culture," he says. A vital component of this program is the homestay arrangement. Many students stay with local families who provide a safe and welcoming home. This arrangement benefits both students and families, fostering connections that can last a lifetime.

The program not only focuses on academics but also encourages cultural exchange. On September 4, international students and their homestay families participated in a kickoff event organized by WSD. This event included fun activities like playing volleyball and soccer, and students enjoyed food from a hotdog truck at Assiniboine Park. These informal gatherings help build friendships among students from diverse backgrounds.

On September 6, the day of orientation, students spent the morning understanding the expectations and goals of the program for the upcoming year. WSD International staff explained everything about Winnipeg, how to dress according to seasons and the support available for students to achieve academic and personal success.

In the afternoon, students spent time at The Forks. They participated in the 'Photo Scavenger Hunt' about Canadian things, people, and activities. This fun activity helped them explore the Forks and made the students visit different areas and take photos. The team that completed all tasks also received a special prize.

As winter approaches, excitement builds among the students. Victor looks forward to seeing snow for the first time. At the same time, Mia shares her eagerness to try skiing and join in on Canadian celebrations like Christmas and Halloween. The WSD International Education Program is more than just an academic opportunity; it is a journey of personal growth and cultural discovery.

As these students embrace their time in Winnipeg, they learn in classrooms and become global citizens who will carry their experiences back home.
