DMCI's Ultimate Team

Both players and coaches on this year’s Ultimate team have been working tirelessly to create the best season possible! Ultimate, compared to other sports like basketball and volleyball, is co-ed, meaning that both girls and boys play on the same team. It’s typically less competitive, allowing more room for fun play, while also still practicing skills.
We have interviewed Jonelle A., one player in the Ultimate team. Throughout this season, she has learned about her love for the sport through connecting with teammates and playing against other schools. She says, “I’m more active now and it’s really easy for me to connect with people, and it gives me something to look forward to during the school year.”
However, as with any other sport, Ultimate comes with its own challenges. Jonelle speaks about the hardships of waking up early for practice, injuries, and sometimes not being in the right mindset. “Sometimes you think you’re not doing as good as you should be, so that can really affect me sometimes.” Although every player experiences these challenges, we are proud of them for being able to endure through it all.
For their next tournament, DMCI will be competing with other schools. This opens up the opportunity to learn more about the different plays other people would make, and navigating their way against unpredictability.
We have also interviewed Ms. Nario, one of the Ultimate coaches. She has been coaching Ultimate along with Mr. Chochinou since 2011, bringing the sport to DMCI. She says that the Ultimate team was able to have a scrimmage with St. James Collegiate two weeks ago and everyone had a lot of fun, and last weekend they were able to participate in a tournament which has been running for 30 years.
When asked what she likes about Ultimate, she replied, “seeing young, new players pick up on the skills quite easily because of the leadership that is brought by the senior players.” Along with Jonelle, she also likes that the sport is multi-grade and co-ed.
For the future, Ms. Nario hopes that the team continues to build, having a pool of young players to carry on and be the leaders when they’re older. Both players and students have learned a lot from each other this year, and will keep learning and getting to know one another.
Overall, everyone at DMCI is incredibly proud of all the people involved in this year’s Ultimate team. They are doing an outstanding job, and we hope to see more of them during the season!
