New DMCI Logo Revealed

November 2, 2025 Announcement, Community
New DMCI Logo Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute

The Maroon Oriole was chosen as our new school mascot as it honors the community, our history, and our spirit.

Since 1938, the West End community has been represented by the Oriole. It seemed fitting that we at DMCI, tucked in our corner of the West End, are the Maroon Orioles. It honours our school’s history as it is an animal that is maroon in name and colour, and has wings, as the Flying M does.

Our mascotrepresenting all of us, will be at games, tournaments, events and celebrations, cheering us on.

The logo was designed by competition winner Miguel Ilagan, Grad 2024, and DMCI’s art teacher, Ms. Yudai, in consultation with and input and guidance from the logo committee; Ms. Caetano, Mr. Malandrakis, Ms. Maslanka, Mrs. Turcotte, and our principal, Mrs. Woloschuk

The Maroon Oriole flying upwards captures a sense of positivity and pride. The pose symbolizes how we spread our wings when we learn new things, and that we use our education to lift ourselves up.

The logo is in a block print style. Block printing is also a common art-making method used in many cultures all over the world. By using this style, we are celebrating our school community’s rich diversity of cultural backgrounds and ensuring we all can feel a positive, familial connection to it, no matter who you are or where you’re from.

The design, with its use of black, its large round eye and thunderbird and eagle-like pose, also purposefully gives a nod to the Woodland Art style of the Cree, Ojibwe, and Oji-Cree artists to acknowledge the land our school resides on.

We hope whenever you learn new things, gain new skills, complete new accomplishments, participate in sports, clubs, and events, and celebrate achievements, you feel the school, symbolized by the Maroon Oriole, is there with you supporting youcheering you on, and reminding you who you are.

Matching our new school logo, our new athletics logo replaces our Flying M. The Maroon Oriole’s expression captures our determination, motivation, focus, and drive when we set out to do our thing on the court, field, trailstage, or battle arena! GO MAROONS!
