Maroons have season for the ages

If the Winnipeg Blue Bombers need any inspiration for their upcoming 2017 playoff drive, they should look no further than the Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute Maroons.
DMCI ended a 39-year championship drought with a 30-0 win over the East Kildonan Reivers Oct. 8 at Investors Group Field. Despite the lopsided score, the game was an unpredictable, hard-fought contest in chilly conditions.
The win capped off an undefeated season that saw the Maroons go 10-0 in the Winnipeg High School Football League’s Andy Currie Division.
The team has had its ups and downs since being resurrected in the mid-2000s.
“When we got together last January for our pre-season workouts, we did not see this coming at all,” said head coach John St. Cyr. “With our 1-6 season last year, we thought and hoped we’d be at least an average team this year.”
Mr. St. Cyr, who works at DMCI as an Educational Assistant and is currently completing his education degree through the WSD’s Community Based Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (CATEP), said his team built a winning spirit on and off the field.
“The biggest thing for this team was that we connected as a family… the coaches, the players and everyone across the school and community. We really stuck together through adversity and low (turnout) numbers and just focused on wins, right from that first game with Tec Voc, and we kept the momentum rolling.”
