Roots and Shoots

February 9, 2021

Greenway School is honoured to be included as one of only eight Canadian schools designated as an official "Roots and Shoots" school. As described on the Jane Goodall website; https://janegoodall.ca/our-work/roots-and-shoots/ this program is comprised of thousands of young people of all ages inspired by Dr. Jane Goodall to work at making the world a better place. The program builds on the legacy and vision of Dr. Jane Goodall to empower young people to create practical solutions to big challenges:

First, students identify challenges for people, animals and the environment in their own communities; then they collaborate with community leaders and experts to develop a plan to address a specific need;

  • After that, they take action through youth-led projects and service campaigns to carry out their plan and address the need they identified; and
  • Finally, they take stock of the impact of their action, celebrate what they accomplished, and then apply what they learned to the next issue they decide to take on.
  • They also share with other youth undertaking similar projects across the globe to understand the total impact of the Roots & Shoots family

130 COUNTRIES AND COUNTING...

Roots & Shoots began in 1991 with a group of 12 students in Tanzania who were concerned about their environment. Since then, they have grown to over 150,000 members in 130 countries!

STUDENTS GET TO ADDRESS REAL ISSUES IN THEIR COMMUNITY

Roots & Shoots groups carry out locally and globally-based service projects in a variety of places all over the world. These groups get to address the issues that they think are relevant in their community. As long as it involves the human community, the animal community, or the environment, it can be a Roots & Shoots project!

YOUTH BLOSSOM INTO LEADERS LIKE JANE GOODALL

Roots & Shoots is Dr. Jane's youth-focused organization. She travels around the world meeting with different groups and sometimes attending their annual leadership conferences. If students are growing up with a passion like Jane Goodall, Roots & Shoots is a great place to start!

YOUTH HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET THEIR HANDS DIRTY (or not, if that's not your thing!) Roots & Shoots projects have included everything from tree planting, beekeeping, and habitat beautification, to fairs and festivals, education, and community trips. There's something at Roots & Shoots for everyone.

We are very excited about being a 'Roots & Shoots' school. The program is 'Inquiry based ' and aligns closely with curriculum guides at all grade levels.

This school year each classroom will develop and carry out a project that will better the animal community, human community or our environment. Stay tuned for updates and more news.
