New Gym

Students at Kelvin High School will soon have a new 10,000-sq.-ft. gym, the province announced Monday.
“We want students to be active and engaged,” said Premier Greg Selinger following the announcement. “A new gym will allow another generation of young people and people in the community to enjoy the benefits of active living. When you have an active lifestyle, you do better in school.”
The new gym, which will include new changing rooms and an elevator to meet access requirements, is expected to cost roughly $7 million.
Principal Jim Brown said he’s hoping Kelvin also gets to keep its existing gym, because the school desperately needs the space.
“Right now, with the number of students we have in grade 9 and 10, they pretty much take up every slot.”
Brown said the only in-school physical education classes grade 11 and 12 students take are health classes held in classrooms.
“Their gym time, the actual physical activity hours, are done outside of the regular school day. For some of them that works great. For some of them, it would just be great to have that component in the school.”
Grade 12 student Clement Sackey said it’ll be tough not being able to play in the new gym, but he’d love to come back and coach.
“I think it means something really big for our community. It’s a bigger opportunity to have more space to train, to be physically active.”
Construction is slated for early next year with completion expected by December of 2016.
