Teaching the Youth about Climate Change

As part of the NorthSTAR (Northern Student-led Arctic Research) program, the Junior Canadian Rangers flew down to Winnipeg to join the Kelvin High School students to present about polar bears and climate change at the Science Rendezvous event. Excitement for science was abundant as 8000 people converged at the University of Manitoba to learn about astronomy, plants, physics, chemistry and polar bears at the biggest hands-on science and engineering festival in Manitoba. What a joy to see the thrill on the faces of young kids as they walked around campus, some exclaiming, “I LOVE Science!”.

"Being able to present our research digestibly to kids was an incredible experience. I hope Science Rendezvous gives those kids the same passion for science it did for me."

Emrik Van Lierop, grade 12

“Kelvin students and the Churchill JCRs did a fantastic job of engaging kids in activities and games. It was great to be part of this exciting university science outreach event.”

Donna Labun

At the Polar Bears on Thin Ice booth, NorthSTAR students entertained and taught about polar bears. Young students could learn about the polar bear’s favourite food at the feed-the-polar-bear bean-bag toss, estimate the body condition of a bear, and identify bears using their scar patterns and whisker printing. One of the favorite activities was the fingerprint/whiskerprint cartoon drawings.
