Artistic WSD students collaborate with Inuit sculptor

Winnipeg School Division celebrates 150 years and 86 years of partnership with the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Students in WSD collaborated with Inuit sculptor Goota Ashoona to create artwork for the Qaumajuq exhibit that celebrates Nuliajuk, the Inuit creator of animals.

Students in Grade 9 to 12 from Sargent Park, Elmwood and General Wolfe, Gordon Bell, Tec-Voc, R.B Russell, Isaac Newton, Kelvin and DMCI schools created artwork for the exhibit.

Students took inspiration from the story of Nuliajuk to create animals that surround Ashoona’s stencilled art. A darker tone is observed in the student artwork compared to Ashoona’s art piece that has a lighter tone. The visual contrast in the collaboration draws the audience in to see the story of Nuliajuk.

The WSD display is currently open to public viewings and can be viewed by heading to the Penthouse level at the WAG. Qaumajuq exhibit will be available from December 16, 2021, to January 9, 2022.
